The Water as a Condition
Author's Note
Papers introduce the Water as a Condition framework, developed by Elena Beresneva. The concepts, terminology, definitions, and propositions presented herein establish the foundation for the papers that follow. Parts of this framework have been presented at the 7th MENA Desalination Projects Forum in Abu Dhabi and discussed on LinkedIn.
The framework is published as a working paper: Water as a Condition: A Framework for Water and Economic Value (2026). https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23068126
* Paper I — Water as a Condition
Quality isn't condition. Condition is chemical inventory, thermodynamics and network dynamics together.
* Paper II — Condition, Participation and Outcome
Water participates in every system it passes through. Its condition decides how it can take part, and each outcome becomes the condition the next system starts with.
* Paper III — Volume ≠ Availability
Available water is water that stays in a condition that allows it to keep participating in natural and human systems.
* Paper IV — Water Condition Intelligence
Intelligence isn't control. Water responds to every interaction, and reading those responses shows how the conditions around it are changing.
* Paper V — Future = ∫₀ᵀ [Water Condition] dt
The future is the sum of water condition over time.
